Becoming A WSH Officer

A profession in safety is very challenging, but also rewarding. An individual looking to become a safety personnel needs certain qualities to take on the responsibility of ensuring the health welfare and lives of those working around him.

With the implementation of the new WSH Act, there has been heightened awareness of Workplace Safety and Health across various industries such as Construction, Marine, and even Service industries such as Landscaping, and Transport and Logistics. Employers are now increasingly looking at building a strong and capable pool of Safety Personnel. In view of that, it is essential to have a person with the right attributes and attitude to be a WSH Personnel.

Below are some preferred qualities of WSH personnel

Preferred Qualities
Have a strong and keen interest in workplace safety and health (WSH)Prepared to take responsibility for the lives and welfare of others Confident, have a firm and decisive nature, and able to influence others to work safely Keen to learn, with a teachable attitude

Excellent team-player and possess good communication skills to interact with people
from different nationalities Able to work under close supervision from senior WSH personnel Good physical condition and able to work outdoors,
e.g.: Working under the sun at constructions sites
Climbing up and down vessels at shipyards
Able to attend night lessons
Have at least 2 years of working experience
Technical/ Engineering background will be advantageous

Typical Job Description of WSH Officers

WSH Officers identify and assess any foreseeable risk arising from the workplace or work
processes and recommend and assist in the implementation of reasonably practicable measures
to eliminate, minimize or control risks.

1. Promote awareness and adoption of safety standards and practices

2. Keep abreast of WSH legal and other requirements

3. Develop and implement WSH Management System

4. Ensure compliance with legal requirements on safety and health issues through:
- WSH Policy
- Safety inspections
- Incident investigations and analysis
- Safety programmes and procedures
- Reviewing safety control measures

5. Communicate WSH matters effectively through:
- Drafting and writing reports
- Conducting WSH presentations and training
- Verbal and written communication channels
- Maintenance of documentation

6. Working with government agencies like MOM on safety and health related matters
