๐Ÿšจ SAFE CONCRETE PUMPING OPERATIONS: STOP HOSE WHIPPING BEFORE IT BECOMES FATAL

Two fatal incidents in September 2026 are a stark reminder: concrete pumping is a high-risk operation that must never be treated as routine.

Concrete pumps improve efficiency and allow concrete to be delivered to elevated and hard-to-reach locations. However, high-pressure concrete pumping can expose workers to hose whipping, sudden concrete discharge, pipeline bursts, moving or collapsing booms, equipment overturning and falls from height.

⚠️ TWO FATALITIES — SEPTEMBER 2026

๐Ÿ”ด 11 September 2026

A worker was struck by a whipping concrete hose after residual high-pressure air was released while clearing a blockage following concrete pumping operations. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

๐Ÿ”ด 28 September 2026

During concrete casting on the 12th storey, a worker holding a flexible concreting hose was struck when concrete suddenly gushed out, causing the hose to whip violently. The worker was thrown against an edge barricade, which was dislodged, resulting in a fatal fall to the ground.

These incidents demonstrate how sudden hose movement can become a life-threatening hazard within seconds.

๐Ÿ›‘ PREVIOUS ACCIDENTS SHOW THESE RISKS ARE NOT NEW

Concrete pumping operations have also been involved in previous serious incidents, including:

• A worker being struck after a concrete pump truck tilted when an outrigger punctured the temporary concrete slab supporting it.

• A worker being pinned between a concrete pump truck chassis and a retracting swivel-type outrigger.

The lesson is clear: concrete pumping requires proper planning, competent operation, effective supervision and strict control of the work area.

✅ 7 CRITICAL CONTROLS FOR SAFE CONCRETE PUMPING

1️⃣ PLAN THE ENTIRE OPERATION

Plan from the arrival of the concrete pump truck until its departure.

Consider:

✔ Ground and slab conditions

✔ Pump stability and outrigger positioning

✔ Pump and boom deployment location

✔ Pipeline configuration

✔ Flexible hose movement

✔ Building edges and fall hazards

✔ Potential blockages and sudden hose whipping

✔ Emergency access and escape routes

2️⃣ ESTABLISH A TASK-SPECIFIC SAFE WORK PROCEDURE

Follow the manufacturer's operating instructions and establish a safe work procedure covering every stage of pumping.

Consider factors affecting pumping pressure and hose movement, including:

• Concrete mix

• Pumping height

• Pipeline configuration

• Hose condition

• Equipment condition

3️⃣ INSPECT BEFORE YOU PUMP

Before starting:

๐Ÿ”Ž Inspect the concrete pump

๐Ÿ”Ž Check pipelines and couplings

๐Ÿ”Ž Inspect flexible hoses

๐Ÿ”Ž Verify components are suitable for the intended operating pressure

๐Ÿ”Ž Ensure connections are properly secured

๐Ÿ”Ž Replace worn, damaged or defective components

Never compromise on the integrity of the pumping system.

4️⃣ PUMP SLOWLY — CONTROL THE PRESSURE

Before pumping:

✔ Prime the delivery pipeline

✔ Ensure the system is free from blockages

✔ Start at a low, controlled pumping rate

✔ Confirm smooth concrete flow

✔ Gradually increase the pumping rate only when conditions are stable

๐Ÿšจ STOP IMMEDIATELY if there is:

• Abnormal pressure

• Interrupted concrete flow

• Unexpected hose movement

• Any unusual condition

Never attempt to clear a blockage by increasing pump pressure beyond the manufacturer's instructions.

5️⃣ KEEP WORKERS AWAY FROM THE LINE OF FIRE

Workers handling flexible hoses must be positioned in a safe and clear area.

๐Ÿšซ Never stand unnecessarily close to the discharge hose.

๐Ÿšซ Never position yourself where sudden hose movement can strike you.

๐Ÿšซ Never work unnecessarily close to an unprotected building edge.

Where working near an edge cannot be avoided, provide effective fall protection in addition to edge protection.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Remember: A worker may survive a hose strike, but a hose strike near an open edge can turn into a fatal fall.

6️⃣ CLEAN AND MAINTAIN THE SYSTEM

After each pour:

๐Ÿงน Flush and clean the concrete pump

๐Ÿงน Clean the delivery pipeline

๐Ÿงน Clean the flexible hose

๐Ÿงน Remove residual concrete and prevent blockages

Proper maintenance helps prevent pressure build-up and uncontrolled concrete discharge during subsequent operations.

7️⃣ COMMUNICATE — STOP — MOVE TO SAFETY

Everyone involved must understand the hazards and emergency actions.

Establish clear communication between:

๐Ÿ‘ท Pump operator

๐Ÿ‘ท Hose handler

๐Ÿ‘ท Supervisors

๐Ÿ‘ท Other workers in the casting area

If abnormal pressure, interrupted flow or unexpected hose movement occurs:

๐Ÿ›‘ STOP PUMPING → ๐Ÿšถ MOVE TO A SAFE LOCATION → ๐Ÿ“ข ALERT OTHERS → ๐Ÿ”ง RECTIFY THE PROBLEM BEFORE RESUMING

๐Ÿ’ก THE GOLDEN RULE

NEVER STAND IN THE LINE OF FIRE OF A PRESSURISED CONCRETE HOSE.

A concrete hose can move violently and unexpectedly when pressure changes or a blockage is released.

Concrete pumping may be routine — but the hazards are not.

Before pressing START, ask:

“Where will the hose move if something goes wrong?”

Then make sure no worker is standing there.

๐Ÿฆบ SAFETY STARTS BEFORE THE FIRST DROP OF CONCRETE

Plan it. Inspect it. Communicate it. Control it.

No pour is so urgent that we cannot stop and make it safe.
