Fire Safety Precautions for PMDs and PABs
The common types of fires in residential premises are unattended cooking, electrical, household contents and discarded items. In 2021, SCDF has reported 192 cases of electrical fires in residential premises. They were 32 incidents of PMD fire and 23 incidents of PAB fire in 2021. PMD and PAB fire incidents can be averted if people follow the PMD fire safety tips properly as listed by SCDF
Fire Safety Precautions for PMDs and PABs
- Do not charge a Power Assisted Bicycle (PAB)/ Personal Mobility Device (PMD) or its batteries near combustible materials or along an escape path.
- Do not leave charging devices/batteries unattended for an extended period of time or overnight.
- Do use a power adaptor that carries the Safety Mark and is recommended by the manufacturer.
- Do not charge the PAB/PMD immediately after use.
- Do not tamper, modify, or attempt to repair a PAB/PMD on a hard, flat surface to allow optimal dissipation of heat.
- Do purchase PMDs with the UL2272 Certification Mark. Do purchase PABs with the EN15194 certification and affixed with LTA’s orange seal of approval.
- Do regularly examine batteries for any damage or deformities such as bloating, corrosion or powdery residue.
What to do when a PMD/PAB catches fire?
